Guardians / 门神
2023
Acrylic on canvas
Each panel 23” x 32”
Drawing from the Chinese tradition of Men Shen, which are believed to protect homes from evil spirits, 'Guardians' explores the complexities of cultural identitiy and conflict. Men Shen, or gate guardians, are typically depicted as fierce warriors or deities from folk legends. They are painted or carved on the entrances to homes to serve as decorative elements. 'Guardians' depicts twin headless warriors dressed in medieval European and Asian attire, locked in a clash, yet their own limbs and swords are entwined by vines. This raises crucial questions: From whom do we seek protection—ourselves or external forces? Is the true threat found outward or within?
